Iwament · Games and interactive media

Making Learning Playful.

We're an independent media and technology studio creating games and interactive experiences. The work is growing toward play that helps people learn, explore, practise, and develop their skills.

Studio artwork, not a screenshot. Chess, puzzle, quiz, and the other games are published on HD Games.

Flagship product

HD Games is the studio's first product.

Iwament creates and publishes its own work. HD Games is the place to play now. Further educational and computational games are a direction for the studio, not a list of finished releases.

What the studio creates

Games, learning, and interactive media.

  1. 01

    Games

Playable products with a point of view. HD Games is the live example: board, card, puzzle, and quiz games, including Chess, at hdgames.org.

  2. 02

    Learning through play

Educational games are where the studio is heading: experiences that help people practise, explore, and build skill without feeling like a textbook.

  3. 03

    Interactive media

Computational thinking, story-led play, and other digital experiences the studio intends to design, build, and own.

Approach

Curious work, made with care.

The studio sits between an independent game maker, an education studio, and a digital media practice. The aim is play that respects the player's intelligence.

01

Start with the experience

Interaction, challenge, and tone come before a feature list. If a product is for learning, the learning intent should be clear.

02

Build it properly

The same studio that publishes the game is responsible for the craft: interface, content, and the technology underneath.

03

Say what is true

Live products are labelled as live. Ideas still in exploration are labelled as directions, not as shipped games.

In exploration

Future products, not current releases.

These are areas Iwament intends to develop. They are not available products, and they do not describe features of HD Games unless the product page says so.

  • Mathematics and problem-solving

Games that let people practise reasoning through play.

  • Computational thinking

Coding and systems ideas, approached as games rather than lessons.

  • Science and technology

Interactive ways to explore how things work.

  • Language and literacy

Play built around words, reading, and expression.

  • Challenges

Competitive learning games, once there is a product ready to show.

  • Adventure and 3D play

Story-led and spatial experiences on the studio's longer roadmap.

Ideas

Notes on play and learning.

A journal for game-based learning, educational game design, computational thinking, and interactive media.

The move you can hand to someone else

Computational thinking is often described so broadly that any puzzle qualifies. A stricter test, from Peter Denning, is whether the next step can be carried out by a model without a person deciding what the step means.

Publish chess. Leave the IQ claim out.

Chess is on HD Games because the rules are deep and already shared. Reviews of school chess lessons do not show that the game reliably lifts general ability, reading, or mathematics once the comparison is fair.

A finished round is not a course

A 2013 review found a modest learning gain from serious games, and no reliable rise in motivation. The larger gains came when play was repeated and joined to other teaching. A round on HD Games is that loop. It is not a syllabus.
